One of the farms we toured grew both rice and corn - two of my favorite foods! This was what inspired my husband and I to create a hush puppy recipe using fresh Texas corn. It was so interesting seeing how the foods we love are produced, as well as all of the steps farmers take to conserve resources, such as water. Home-cooked hush puppies are SO much better than anything you’d get at a drive through!Įarlier this month, my husband and I had the honor of touring several farms near Wharton, TX for the Field to Fork event. During our farm tour, we visited a rice and corn farm, a catfish farm, and the United Ag grain elevator and cotton gin. The evening wrapped with a delicious farm to table meal prepared by Houston chef Brandon Silva and featuring local ingredients. When I found out my husband had only tried hush puppies from a fast food restaurant, I knew we needed to make them at home so he could see why I love them so much. I love to dip them in cinnamon honey butter! I mean, it doesn’t get much better than warm balls of fried cornbread dough, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. It’s not exactly the same but it’s probably close enough. Southern cornbread mix has no sugar and the primary ingredient is cornmeal.Ĭan I substitute Jiffy Mix for cornmeal? Absolutely. If you check the ingredients list of Jiffy Mix the first ingredient is flour and it also contains sugar. Is Jiffy corn muffin mix the same as cornmeal? Well, not exactly. Just reheat, add a pat or two of butter and some syrup. Got leftovers? Well in the South these Southern Fried Cornbread Patties are just as likely to show up on the breakfast table with syrup as they are for supper with turnip greens. Remove to paper towels to absorb excess fat. If cornbread mix is available in your area you can substitute that and just follow the instructions on the bag for making the batter. It’s cornmeal, flour, salt, and leavening. In the South, we can buy a cornbread mix already made up. That’s the first 5 ingredients in the recipe. This recipe uses ingredients that make up the cornbread mix. The recipe below is for cornbread so adjust the buttermilk to your liking. The only variation that I make with fried versus baked is that I make the batter for fried thinner. Now if you added diced onions and deep-fried you would have hush puppies. Cornbread batter that has been fried instead of baked. Southern Fried Cornbread Patties are exactly that. Hot water cornbread is just plain cornmeal, salt, maybe a little sugar and hot water. There always seems to be some confusion there. Now I want to emphasize that this is not hot water cornbread. I remember inspecting pieces before I took a bite in order to avoid the hot pepper pieces! It fried up kinda’ flat and nice and crispy. With the thin batter, the cornbread didn’t puff up too much. According to my aunt, it was her regular cornbread batter made a little thinner with extra buttermilk. It was just fried cornbread with hot peppers chipped up in it. Grandma made what she called pepper patties. As a child, this was a favorite at my Grandma’s house! Well, this Southern Fried Cornbread Patties recipe is at any rate. I’ve always lived in the South so any Southern recipe is kinda’ in my DNA.
